It is legal to own a capybara in Portugal. However, the capybara is a giant cavy rodent native to South America. You may not find one in Portugal if you wish to buy a Capybara as a pet.
The capybara inhabits savannas and dense forests and lives near bodies of water. It is a highly social species and can be found in groups as large as 100 individuals, but usually live in groups of 10–20 individuals.
As they live in a group, they may not like living with you as a pet.
Capybaras that are habituated to people can be exceptionally affectionate. They love to be petted.
Are Capybaras friendly to humans?
Capybaras are very friendly with human beings as well as other animals. They are very social type which makes them very friendly.
How much does a baby Capybara cost?
The cost of buying a capybara ranges from 800 Euro to 2,500 Euro depending on where you buy it from and the age of the capybara. Younger or baby capybaras tend to have a higher price tag than older ones.
Short Description of Capybara
The capybara has a heavy, barrel-shaped body and short head, with reddish-brown fur on the upper part of its body that turns yellowish-brown underneath.
Its sweat glands can be found on the surface of the hairy portions of its skin, an unusual trait among rodents. The animal lacks down hair, and its guard hair differs little from over hair.
Adult capybaras grow to 106 to 134 cm (3.48 to 4.40 ft) in length, stand 50 to 62 cm (20 to 24 in) tall at the withers, and typically weigh 35 to 66 kg (77 to 146 lb).
Their average life expectancy is 8-10 years.
What does Capybara eat?
Capybaras are herbivores and they mainly eat grasses and aquatic plants. They also eat fruits and tree bark. Their favorite fruit is orange.
They are very selective feeders and feed on the leaves of one species and disregard other species surrounding it.
Can a Capybara hurt you?
Capybaras are docile animals, however, their large rodent incisive teeth could cause serious injury.
Although generally shy and docile, capybaras are strong and capable of inflicting bites with serious consequences.
Do Capybaras cry?
Capybaras cry in the sense they have tear ducts to moisturize their eyes, but they do not emotionally cry like humans.
