Blinking in Portugal is illegal and it’s frowned upon. If you are found blinking you would have to pay a heavy fine in Portugal.
No, we aren’t talking about Eye blinking. We are talking about Car headlights blinking.
For those of you who don’t know what blinking is, it is a way of warning other drivers that traffic police or speed checks are ahead by turning the headlights off and on again.
Blinking in the UK is called Flashing.
Headlight flashing attracts attention, and so can be considered the visual equivalent of blowing the horn.
Blinking can also indicate the intention to overtake or pass another driver, or to signal a driver who has just overtaken that he or she can now return to the original lane. Flashing can request or insist that a leading driver speed up or change lanes to get out of the way of a faster following driver.
As part of the Highway Code, drivers are instructed to use their headlights “only to let other road users know that you are there,” and not to attempt “to convey any other message”.
Police are able to charge drivers with this criminal offense if they perceive the person has obstructed their ability to conduct speed checks on other motorists.
